Wheeled Excavators Sourcing Guide
Pre-owned wheeled excavators are highly prized by municipal contractors for their high road speeds and mobility, completely eliminating the need for low-loader transport trailers between job sites.
1. Core Mechanical Transmissions Inspection
Unlike crawlers, wheeled excavators feature complex drivetrain, axles, and braking systems that demand meticulous evaluation:
- Transmission Gear Shift: Test the power-shift transmission across all speed ranges. Gear shifting should be immediate, smooth, and without transmission slip or clunking noises.
- Axle Play and Oil Leaks: Inspect both front steerable and rear rigid axles for gear oil leaks at the hubs and differential housings. Check steering knuckles for play.
- Outrigger & Blade Operation: Check the hydraulic cylinders of stabilizers (outriggers) and the front blade. They must hold high pressure under load without drifting down.
2. Tire and Wheel Assessment
Tire replacement costs on heavy wheeled excavators can be substantial. Evaluate tire wear meticulously:
- Tread Depth: Ensure at least 60% of original tread depth remains for safe off-road traction.
- Dual Tire Spacers: Many wheeled excavators use dual tire configurations. Verify that stone-guard rings are present between tires to prevent tire sidewall puncture damage.
Wheeled excavators are premium machinery assets. Direct sourcing from trusted yards ensuring original hydraulic blocks and certified transmissions guarantees project efficiency and lowest overhead costs.
